10 Thatched Holiday Cottages in England
Self contained holiday lets are more popular than ever in 2021 and luckily there are no shortages of sweet country cottages that you can rent for the week! Where better to rest your head than under the roof of a cottage that has been standing for hundreds of years? Below are 10 of my favourites!
Inglenook Cottage, Broad Campden, Cotswolds
Perfect for a romantic retreat, Inglenook Cottage in Broad Campden is a picturesque, one-bedroom thatched cottage bursting with character and set in an ideal village.
The cottage is Grade II listed and over 300 years old, once an old smithy it features a large inglenook fireplace with a seat you can cosy up in.
Pets are allowed, and tall people, whilst welcome, might hit their head on the beams.
The Coach House, Crowcombe, Somerset
Perfectly placed at the foot of the Quantock Hills in Somerset, the Coach House is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape away from urban life. Ideal for a couples getaway or a solo retreat, the property sits behind a private gated entrance and along a path.
Despite the historic nature of the property, the kitchen is fully equipped with all the amenities you could need, including and electric oven and microwave.
Hathaway Cottage, Hook Norton, Oxfordshire
Hook Norton is one of my favourite hideaways in England. Located on the edge of the Cotswolds, there is an abundance of places to explore. Hathaway Cottage is a recently renovated thatched cottage that sleeps two guests, the kitchen is beautifully finished with an Aga and an array of cook books are on display if you fancy polishing up on your culinary skills.
The cosy living room offers a wood burner for days spent curled up on the sofa with a book, and the character continues upstairs with exposed wide elm floor boards and mullion windows.
Field Cottage, Pershore, Worcestershire
Field Cottage is set on the slopes of Bredon Hill, surrounded by tranquil countryside with superb walking opportunities. built of beautiful stone, the cottage offers ample period features. The inglenook fireplace provides a cosy place to curl up on a cold evening before slipping into a warm bath.
The cottage sleeps two guests but offers a separate garden room which sleeps a further two guests in either twin beds or a supersize king bed.
Field Cottage is surrounded by interesting places to go (and a pub within walking distance!), including Stratford on Avon, Sudeley Castle, Worcester, Pershore Abbey and many more.
Appleyard Cottage, Wiltshire
Wiltshire is well known for its pretty, rural villages and Donhead St Mary is no exception. Appleyard Cottage is the perfect mix of characterful and modern, there is WiFi, a wood burning stove, central heating, and a Rayburn cooker.
There is a double bedroom and twin bedroom making room for a small family, two well behaved dogs are also welcome. The well equipped kitchen has an attractive Rayburn cooker but there is also a ceramic hob for those who feel more confident cooking on electric.
The window seats are a comforting place to perch, but the living room does offer comfy sofas and a cosy wood burning stove. There is a small front garden where you can enjoy breakfast or a nice al fresco dinner, there is also an enclosed rear courtyard, useful for those who bring their four legged friends.
Gardener’s Cottage, Thornham Magna, Suffolk
Dating back to the 17th century, Gardener’s Cottage is a Grade II listed, timber framed property that has been sensitively restored by the owners. The cottage benefits from a spacious garden filled with fruit trees and a wild flower orchard.
The cottage has a double bedroom and twin bedroom each with their own individual staircases, the double bedroom boasts an en-suite bathroom.
The cottage sits on the edge of the Thornham Estate which offers 12 miles of fabulous walks within the estate grounds through beautiful parkland and ancient woodland. The village contains a number of amenities, including a cafe, restaurant and photography gallery, there is a pub within walking distance.
Laundry Cottage, Eversholt, Dorset
This Grade II listed cottage was built in the 1700s, right in the heart of Thomas Hardy country. This home from home offers two guest rooms, an open inglenook fire, three oven electric Aga, a large garden with a terrace, orchard and small pond.
The village offers a local pub, village shop and post office, popular bakery and a restaurant and a spa hotel. It is just steps away from Melbury Park, a breathtaking deer park and a manor house and interesting gardens.
Please note dogs are welcome but this is an adult only cottage.
Smithycroft, Combe St Nicholas, Somerset
Smithycroft is the perfect retreat for families, especially those who want to bring their dogs. With 3 guest bedrooms, the cottage offers a spacious retreat and an enclosed garden to enjoy the fresh air. The cottage is at the heart of incredible walking country on the Somerset/Devon border.
The traditional thatched cottages offers plenty of opportunities to relax, especially in the beautiful roll top bath, there are lots of luxurious touches all over the house.
Magna Cottage, Ashmore, Shaftesbury, Dorset
The perfect option for those travelling with a bigger group of people, Magna Cottage can sleep up to 8 guests across 4 characterful bedrooms.
The 300 year old cottage is located in a secluded valley on the Cranborne Chase Area of Natural Beauty. and offers walking trails in abundance, through woodland, rolling hills, alongside streams and luckily to a local pub too!
Cuckoo Nod Cottage, Coombe Keynes,
Dorset
Just 10 minutes from the breathtaking Dorset coastline, Cuckoo Nod Cottage is a stunning family cottage that has been lovingly restored throughout with light and modern decor. The spacious living room sits under exposed beams and the neighbouring dining room seats up to 6 people.
The kitchen contains everything you need with an Aga and breakfast table, upstairs is home to 3 bedrooms and large family shower room. There is a sizeable garden to the rear with lawns, a patio terrace and outdoor seating.
From the cottage you are just a few minutes drive from the famous South West Coast Path along the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO world heritage site and great place to soak up the views of Durdle Door.
