There are an abundance of fairytale towns in France, and Brittany in the northwest is home to some of the best. Fougères, in the Ille-et-Vilaine department, is one of them. Built around a beautiful castle, Fougères has the oldest medieval fortress in Europe.
History of Fougères
The pretty French town of Fougères is renowned for its rich history and breathtaking medieval castle, one of the most iconic in Brittany.
The construction of Fougères Castle began in the 12th century; a castle was built to defend Brittany from French invaders. The castle has expanded over the years and withstood numerous sieges, including those from the English during the Hundred Year's War.
It wasn't until the 17th century that the military importance of Fougères and its castle declined as warfare evolved and the boundaries of Brittany changed.
During the Industrial Revolution, the town grew economically, becoming a centre for glass and shoe manufacturing. The population grew, as did the town which now surrounds the castle itself.
During World War II, Fougères was occupied by German forces before the town was liberated by American Troops. Sadly, many historic buildings were damaged or destroyed.
Today, it is known for its preservation of medieval buildings, particularly the castle itself. Open to the public, the medieval quarter takes visitors and day trippers on a journey back in time.
