Hong Island Krabi: Is It Worth Visiting & How to Get There? (Honest 2026 Guide)

Quick answer: is Hong Island worth visiting?

Yes!! Hong Island in Krabi is absolutely worth visiting, but only if you do it right.

It’s one of the most beautiful island stops in Thailand, with calm turquoise water and dramatic limestone cliffs, but it gets very busy by mid-morning. I’d highly recommend visiting early or booking a private boat.

It’s more scenic than the 4 island tour, but less varied, so the best choice depends on what you want from your day.

Where is Hong Island and why is it famous?

Hong Island is part of Than Bok Khorani National Park in Krabi, which means it’s protected, so there are no hotels, and you’ll need to pay a small entrance fee (around THB 300 - £6.80).

It’s known for:

  • Towering limestone cliffs
  • A hidden lagoon surrounded by rock formations
  • Calm, shallow turquoise water
  • Soft sandy beach landing area
  • Beautiful view point of Phang Nga Bay

It’s often included in a wider Phang Nga Bay boat tour, alongside snorkelling stops and nearby islands.

Is Hong Island worth visiting?

On paper, Hong Island is one of the most beautiful places near Krabim but your experience depends entirely on when and how you visit.

What’s good:

The scenery is impressive. The cliffs feel more dramatic than many other island stops, and the water is incredibly clear and calm.

I visited from Koh Yao Noi on a sunrise boat tour and arrived at 7am, I was the first person on the island, which completely changed the experience for the better.

For that first hour, it felt quiet, spacious and relaxed. You could enjoy the beach before the boats started arriving.

There’s also more to do than I expectedm a nature trail, a viewpoint (which opens at 8am), and basic facilities on the island.

What’s not

By mid-morning, it gets busy and you start sharing the viewpoint. Most tours arrive between 9am–12pm, and at that point the beach fills up quickly. The lagoon can also feel crowded depending on the tide and timing.

Early moning on Hong Island

It’s also a tour-based destination, not somewhere you explore freely for hours. If you arrive at the wrong time, it can feel rushed and less special.

Hong Island vs 4 island tour, which is better?

This is one of the biggest decisions people make when planning island tours from Krabi.

Here’s my comparison:

Scenery

🏝️ Hong Island wins. It’s more striking and feels more unique.

Variety

🥥 4 island tour wins. You’ll visit more locations in one day.

Crowds

🌺 Both get busy

Overall experience

🌊 If you want one standout location, choose Hong Island.
🏝️ If you want a mix of stops, choose the 4 island tour.

Personally, I preferred Hong Island, the beaches felt more picturesque and less chaotic than the typical 4 island route.

How to visit Hong Island

This is where your experience is made or broken.

Private longtail boat (best option)

This is what I did, and I’d strongly recommend it.

  • You can leave early (sunrise is ideal)
  • You avoid crowds completely for the first couple of hours
  • You can stay longer at the stops you enjoy

🌅If you’re booking, this is where I’d prioritise a private or early departure tour. I booked this private long tail boat from Koh Yao Noi

Group tour (cheapest but busiest)

This is the most common option.

  • Fixed departure times
  • Usually mid-morning arrivals
  • Often rushed between stops

It’s fine if you’re on a budget, but expect crowds.

Hong Island from Krabi vs Phuket

  • From Krabi → quickest and easiest (20–40 minutes by boat)
  • From Phuket → longer day trip, more tiring

I visited from Koh Yao Noi, which worked really well for early access, but most people will go from Krabi or Phuket.

Best time to visit Hong Island

Timing is everything here.

  • Before 9am → best experience (quiet, calm, fewer boats)
  • Late afternoon → quieter again
  • Midday → busiest and most crowded

If you only take one thing from this guidem go early.

Can you stay on Hong Island?

No, there are no hotels or accommodation on Hong Island.

It’s a day trip destination only, usually visited as part of a boat tour from Krabi, Phuket or nearby islands.

What to expect (realistic experience)

Hong Island is best thought of as a highlight stop, not a full-day destination.

You’ll find:

  • A sandy beach landing area
  • Clear, shallow water for swimming
  • A lagoon (tide-dependent access)
  • A viewpoint (opens at 8am)
  • A short nature trail
  • Basic facilities (toilets, small food area)

One thing to note, there’s no toilet roll, so it’s worth going before you leave if that’s something you’d rather avoid. No toilet roll is allowed to be flushed on the islands due to waste management. Bring your own tissues which you can then bin, or go before you arrive.

How this fits into a Thailand itinerary

Hong Island is best included as a day trip from Krabi or Phuket, rather than a destination in its own right.
