Is April a Good Time to Visit Greece?

Visiting Greece at any time of the year is a beautiful experience. However, some months are better than others. Is April a good time to visit Greece? Well it just depends on what you want to get from your holiday.

What is the weather in Greece in April?

Average temperatures in April differ depending on what part of the country you are in.

In Athens, you can expect a pleasant spring climate with mild to warm temperatures (20°C to 22°C during the day), and with more sunshine, and less rainfall compared to the winter months.

The weather will also differ across the Greek islands. Expect daytime temperatures of 18°C to 22°C, with a small risk of rain. The sea is still relatively cool from the winter compared to the summer months, with average sea temperatures around 16°C to 18°C. While it may be too brisk for some to swim, others find it refreshing, especially towards the end of the month.

Northern Greece is a little cooler in April. This region, encompassing areas like Thessaloniki, the Chalkidiki peninsula, and parts of the Epirus and Macedonia regions, experiences a more continental climate compared to the southern parts of the country. Day time temperatures usually range from 18-20°C.

Why visit Greece in April?

April in Greece is shoulder season meaning you'll encounter fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed and intimate experience. This is a great time to visit popular destinations like the Acropolis in Athens, the ancient ruins of Delphi, or the beautiful islands of the Aegean and Ionian seas.

Another perk to visiting Greece in shoulder season is the lower prices of hotels and service providers. April is a cost-effective and pleasant time to enjoy the beauty of Greece without killing your budget.

The pleasant temperatures and the beauty of the spring landscape make April an excellent month for hiking, particularly in the mountainous regions of Northern Greece, where wildflowers and greenery begin to bloom. It’s also a great time to explore archaeological sites and historic towns without the heat of the summer months.

When is Greek Orthodox Easter?

Greek Orthodox Easter is later than other Christian Easter days. Often it will fal in April but in 2024 is on 5th May.
Orthodox Easter time is a great time to visit as you can experience the celebrations and unique traditions throughout the country. Participating in Easter festivities offers a deep insight into Greek culture, with local communities hosting special events, religious ceremonies, and feasts. Witnessing the midnight Resurrection service and enjoying the communal atmosphere of the Easter Sunday feast are unforgettable experiences.

What to wear

There tends to be a bigger difference between day and night temperatures in Greece during spring, because of this it can be confusing to know what to pack.

Whilst I advise checking the weather forecast before travelling, you can be pretty sure that you will need a mix of clothing.
I recommend bringing trousers, a light jacket, comfy trainers, t shirts and some sandals too. I still recommend bringing SPF as the sun in Greece can be pretty strong even in the spring months. A waterproof jacket or umbrella is advisable for occasional showers.

Culinary Experiences

Greek cuisine in April features fresh spring vegetables, wild herbs, and the beginning of the seafood season. Enjoy al fresco dining in a taverna, tasting traditional dishes like lamb roasted with lemon and herbs (a common Easter dish), fresh artichokes, and the first catch of the season. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in a local olive oil or wine tasting.

Spring landscapes in Greece

April’s spring blooms and lush greenery make it a fantastic month for nature lovers. The countryside is dotted with wildflowers, making hikes and walks particularly enjoyable. Consider visiting the Vikos Gorge in Epirus, one of the deepest canyons in the world, or exploring the verdant landscapes of the Peloponnese.

What are the negatives of visiting Greece in April?

Milder temperatures

If you are looking to swim in the sea or spend days lounging on the beach, April probably isn't the best time for that.

Whilst temperatures are pleasant and a beach stroll would be delightful, you might feel a chill after a while of actually laying there.

Hotel closures

Because Apri is still shoulder season, and technically low season in Greece earlier on in the month, not all hotels will be open, especially those in the islands.

Easter closures

Easter celebrations are amazing but will mean closures and reduced services. Many businesses, including shops and restaurants, may close for several days around the Easter weekend as Greeks celebrate the holiday with their families.

Quieter nightlife

For travellers seeking a vibrant nightlife, April might seem a bit quiet. While Athens and some other tourist spots maintain an active nightlife, many island destinations are just beginning to wake up from the off-season, resulting in a more subdued atmosphere.

Swimming and Water Sports

Apart from cooler sea temperatures, water sports and other beach-related services may not yet be available or are just starting to open for the season. This can limit options for those looking to engage in activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, or jet skiing.

Limited Operating Hours for Some Attractions

In April, Greece is transitioning from the low season to the high season, meaning some tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops may have limited operating hours. Additionally, certain seasonal services, like ferries to less popular islands or beach amenities, might not be fully operational yet.

Island hopping in spring is harder as the ferries don't operate a full service until the peak season.

Unpredictable Weather

While April in Greece sees the onset of spring with generally mild and pleasant weather, it can also be unpredictable. Occasional rain showers and cooler evenings are common, which might affect outdoor activities and sightseeing plans. Packing for varying weather conditions becomes essential.

General tips for visiting Greece in spring

  • Respect religious customs, especially if visiting during Easter.
  • Check local event schedules as some attractions may have altered hours during the Easter holidays.
  • Pack for all weather events, just incase.
  • If you are heading to the islands, check the ferry schedule before you make plans, as ferries may not depart every day during this time of year.

Visiting Greece in April offers the perfect blend of pleasant weather, cultural immersion, and the opportunity to experience the country's renowned historical sites and stunning natural beauty without the crowds. Whether you're participating in age-old Easter traditions, exploring ancient ruins, or simply enjoying the spring landscapes, April in Greece promises a memorable and enriching travel experience.
