Is Mykonos Expensive? How to Visit on a Budget?
With super yachts in the harbour, expensive restaurants lining the seafront, and ultra luxury hotels all over the island, it's unsurprising many question whether Mykonos is expensive and if they can afford a trip here.
There are plenty of ways to blow the budget in Mykonos but I hope my guide on how to visit Mykonos on a budget will show you this gorgeous Greek island is accessible to more than the ultra rich.
How to get to Mykonos
Flying to Mykonos
There are direct flights to Mykonos from various European cities and contrary to public assumption, its often cheaper than flying to Athens and taking the ferry.
London to Mykonos flights take 3 hours and 45 minutes, departing from Gatwick, Luton, London City and Heathrow. Prices in the shoulder season are between £100-£200 return, less if you are lucky or don't take luggage.

Taking the ferry to Mykonos
Island hopping from Mykonos is a popular choice of holiday thanks to the regular ferries that serve the island. There are also daily ferries from Athens, taking approximately five hours. Many people choose to spend a few nights in Athens before moving onto the islands.
If you are visiting Mykonos from other islands in the Cyclades I recommend checking the ferry schedules and prices on Direct Ferries.
How to get around Mykonos on a budget
TAKING THE BUS IN Mykonos
The cheapest way to get around Mykonos is by bus.
Yes, using the bus in Mykonos is an excellent way to get around the island and avoid paying for a rented car.
The bus network in Mykonos connects Mykonos Town (also known as Chora) with many of the island's major beaches, villages, and points of interest. There are two main bus stations in Mykonos Town: the Old Port bus station (for buses to the northern part of the island) and the Fabrika bus station (for buses to the southern beaches and other destinations).
The buses run regularly in summer, and visitors can easily plan their day exploring around the bus schedule. Ensure you check the most up-to-date bus timetables; bus frequency can depend on the time of day and destination.
Most of the buses in Mykonos start between 7am and 7:30am and stop running between midnight and 1am.
Tips for Using Buses in Mykonos
- Have Cash: Purchase your bus tickets on board or at ticket kiosks. Always carry cash, credit cards may not always be accepted for bus fares.
- Arrive Early: Buses can get crowded, especially those heading to popular beaches or during peak times. Arriving a bit early can help ensure you get a spot.
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on announcements or notices at bus stations for any changes in schedules or routes, particularly due to seasonal adjustments or special events.
HIRING A CAR IN Mykonos
I recommend car hire in Santorini if you want to explore the island on your on watch and if you want to travel further than the bus network will take you. If you are just wanting to jump between the main towns or relax by the pool, then save your money and take the bus instead.
Mykonos Airport has a great car rental service with many of the large car hire brands as well as some smaller Greek ones which are usually cheaper.
Please be aware that most cars on Mykonos are manual, if you are uncomfortable with this then please book your car as far in advance as possible. In Greece, all cars drive on the right side of the road.
It is possible to pick up a car hire from Mykonos ferry port if you aren't coming from the airport.
In order to get the best price possible for a car hire in Mykonos, use a comparison website such as Discover Cars or RentalCars.
TAKING TAXIS IN Mykonos
There are a limited number of taxis in Mykonos, there are two taxi ranks in Mykonos Town but in peak summer season you will be waiting around in a queue to get one.
Taxis in Mykonos use metres. Alternatively, you can call a taxi, but the fee will be higher. It's important to note taxi tariffs increase to almost double the cost from midnight-5am.
You can flag taxis down in the street if you spot one or walk to a taxi rank which are located at the central point of each village, at the Port, in the central square of Mykonos town, and outside Fabrica bus station.
When is the best time to go to Mykonos?
Travel in the shoulder season (April-May, September-October) for the best prices. The weather in Mykonos during these times are pleasant, less hot, but still very sunny.
The tourist season mainly kicks off in mid-May and finishes in late September/early October. The peak season is mid-June to mid-September.
Not only will you save money by travelling during the shoulder season in Mykonos, but the island will be quieter and exploring will be more pleasant out of the hot summer's heat.

Whilst it is a popular spot for sunset in Mykonos, don't be shy to visit during the day. Grab a bite to eat and a cocktail, and enjoy the view!
Relax on the Beaches
While some of the island's beaches are organised with sunbeds and umbrellas for a fee, many offer free sections where you can lay down a towel and enjoy the sun and sea. Agios Stefanos, Paraga, and Ornos have areas where you can enjoy the beach without paying for facilities.
Hike from Mykonos Town to the Lighthouse
Take a scenic hike from Mykonos Town to the Armenistis Lighthouse on the northwest tip of the island. The walk offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea, and the lighthouse itself is a picturesque spot for photos.

The Monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera village is open to visitors and offers a glimpse into the spiritual heritage of Mykonos. Admire the intricate woodcarvings, icons, and the peaceful courtyard without an entrance fee.
Discover Remote Beaches and Coves
Mykonos has several less-visited beaches and coves, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. Explore the island to find your own piece of paradise where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Mykonos.
In conclusion, visiting Mykonos on a budget is easily doable. There are plenty of affordable hotels and guesthouses on the island, as well as lots of free experiences to enjoy.
My biggest recommendation is saving money on accommodation by travelling in shoulder season, and making the most of the island's beautiful walks, towns and views.
