Luxury Hotel Review: The Retreat Koh Chang - Best Hotel in Koh Chang for a Relaxing Stay in Thailand

The Retreat Koh Chang: A Luxury Hotel Experience in Thailand

Tucked away on the peaceful island of Koh Chang, The Retreat is a newly opened luxury boutique hotel that offers a luxurious and peaceful haven, far removed from the bustling tourist hotspots of Thailand. Ideal for travellers seeking a quiet escape, this jungle-esque hotel is among the best hotels in Koh Chang, providing an exclusive retreat in one of Thailand's most tranquil settings.

Where is the Retreat Koh Chang?

Nestled on Koh Chang, one of the largest and most picturesque islands in the Gulf of Thailand, The Retreat is perfectly located near the renowned Kai Bae Beach, known for its golden sands and stunning sunsets.

Whilst the hotel enjoys close proximity to restaurants, shops, and market stalls, when in its grounds, you'll feel completely removed from the outside world.

Getting to The Retreat Koh Chang is is hassle-free, with staff arranging transfers from Trat Airport, the nearest airport to Koh Chang, followed by a ferry ride to the island and a comfortable transfer to the hotel itself.

First Impressions

My experience at The Retreat Koh Chang began on a high, with a hotel representative waiting to greet me as soon as I stepped out of Trat Airport. The private minivan provided for the transfer was smooth and comfortable, making (what I thought was) a daunting journey totally effortless.

The trip from Trat Airport to Koh Chang involves a short ride to the Ferry Koh Chang pier, where you board the ferry still in the minivan for a scenic 30-minute sail across to the island. From there, it’s just a 20-minute drive to The Retreat, a hassle-free arrival.

Upon reaching the hotel, I was warmly welcomed by friendly staff and handed a chilled drink, the perfect introduction to my newly tropical surroundings!

Check-in was quick, and I couldn't help but marvel at the hotel’s grounds. Every inch of the property, from the lush lawns to the towering palm trees, was meticulously maintained. Closing my eyes, I could hear the soft rustling of palm leaves and the melodic calls of tropical birds. My first thought? Is this paradise? So far, I knew I picked one of the best hotels in Koh Chang.

Room Categories

The Retreat offers four distinct categories of guest rooms, each designed with luxury and relaxation in mind. Prices start at £145 per night in low season and £185 per night in high season, offering excellent value for one of the best boutique hotels in Thailand.

The Deluxe Pool Access Rooms are a highlight, featuring private terraces with direct swim-up pool access. These stylish one-bedroom rooms come with partial ocean views and a sun lounging deck, ideal for those looking to soak up the tropical sun.

The Retreat Pool Duplex Villa

I was so lucky to stay in the top-tier accommodation, the Retreat Pool Duplex Villa, a villa set to impress anyone!

This two-storey villa offers an expansive living space that flows into a stylish kitchen and dining area, perfect for in-villa dining. You then step outside to a private terrace, where you’ll find your very own pool, an exclusive luxury in Koh Chang.

Hotel facilities

Despite its small size and boutique design, the Retreat Koh Chang still offers an abundance of facilities.

You could never get hungry here; the Ocean Terrace Restaurant & Bar offers farm-to-table dining, using sustainably sourced ingredients in dishes to be enjoyed right next to the ocean.

In the evenings, guests can indulge in a Japanese-Asian menu, best enjoyed between 6 and 7pm when the sun is setting.

The Glasshouse Gym is the perfect place for a run on the treadmill, thanks to its breathtaking sea views; I've never wanted to step into a gym so much in my life. Fitness lovers can also enjoy yoga classes held by the ocean.

Oh and how could I forget, of course there is a spa too!

Hotel Activities

Koh Chang is far from a sleepy island despite it being less busy than more well known islands. There’s a wealth of activities to keep visitors entertained, many of which can be conveniently arranged through the hotel.

Guests can embark on custom boat trips in Koh Chang, exploring the surrounding islands in style, or dive into watersports like kayaking, paddle boarding, and even diving, all available upon request.

For those who prefer exploring on foot, the hotel can organise guided hikes through the island’s lush landscapes.

When it’s time to unwind, The Retreat hosts weekly outdoor cinema screenings, an ideal way for couples or families to enjoy a cosy evening under the stars.

For those celebrating a honeymoon in Koh Chang or a special occasion, don’t miss the chance to book an romantic beachside dinner, where you can dine with your feet in the sand whilst listening to the sound of the sea.

Would I Stay at The Retreat Koh Chang Again?

Without a doubt!

The Retreat felt like a slice of paradise, and with Koh Chang being such a large island with so much to offer, three nights simply wasn’t enough. If I ever return to this stunning destination, The Retreat would be my top choice when picking a luxury hotel in Koh Chang.

My only regret? Not setting aside a day to fully enjoy the hotel’s gorgeous facilities, especially the spa and pool. Instead, I found myself hurrying to explore all the island’s attractions, leaving little time to indulge in the tranquillity of the resort.

If you’re considering a stay at The Retreat Koh Chang, I highly recommend it.
