If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, this is usually the first big decision, and it’s not as simple as it looks.
I’ve travelled across Thailand’s islands multiple times, and whilst Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui are often compared, they offer very different experiences. This guide will help you confidently decide which Thai island you should visit, based on how you actually want your trip to feel and the sort of activities you like.
Firstly, I just want to preface that Krabi is on the mainland of Thailand, it's not an island, even if it feels like one thanks to the sandy beaches and ample palm trees.
Quick answer: Phuket vs Krabi vs Koh Samui
If you want the easiest, most well-rounded trip, go to Phuket.
If you want dramatic scenery and a slightly quieter atmosphere, choose Krabi.
If you want a true island feel with great hotels and relaxed beaches, pick Koh Samui.

Which Thai island is best for first-time visitors?
If it’s your first time in Thailand, I’d usually recommend Phuket or Koh Samui thanks to the ease of travel and the amount of places to explore where there. Phuket is in the Andaman Sea on Thailand's west coast, whilst Koh Samui sits in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand.
Phuket is the easiest option. You can land, get to your hotel quickly, and have everything in one place, beaches, day trips, restaurants and nightlife. It removes a lot of the stress from planning.
Koh Samui is a close second, especially if you want something that feels more like an island. It’s slightly more relaxed and curated, but still very easy to navigate.
Krabi is incredible, but I’d personally save it for a second trip when you’re more confident moving around Thailand, although if you have a good amount of time for your trip, you can visit Krabi for a few days from Phuket (I would highly recommend this!).
Which Thai island has the best beaches?
This depends on what kind of beach experience you want.
Phuket
You’ll get the most variety, long sandy beaches, lively areas, and quieter stretches if you know where to stay. The majority of beaches are busy and backed by extensive development. There are a few off the beaten track, smaller beaches that you can reach by longtail boat.
Krabi
The most visually dramatic. Beaches like Railay are stunning, with limestone cliffs and turquoise water, it's unlike anywhere you will ever visit. To visit many of these beautiful beaches you can take a quick longtail boat from Ao Nang.
Koh Samui
The most consistently enjoyable. Beaches here are calm, swimmable, and easy, ideal if you want relaxed beach time without overthinking it. I found Koh Samui easier to explore by road than Phuket as it is less hilly, even the smaller beaches are more accessible. Whilst Koh Samui is developed, it's understated and has no high rise hotels or overly large buildings that disrupt the landscape.
Which Thai island is best for luxury hotels?
For a luxury-focused trip, all three work, but in different ways.
Phuket
The widest choice of luxury hotels and villas. Great if you want variety and flexibility.

Which is best for island hopping?
All three are good starting points, but they lead to very different routes:
- Phuket → Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Similan Islands
- Krabi → Koh Lanta, Phang Nga Bay
- Koh Samui → Koh Phangan, Koh Tao

Which Thai island is best for nightlife?
- Phuket: The strongest nightlife (especially Patong and beach clubs), and even partying during the day at beach clubs
- Koh Samui: A good balance, lively but not overwhelming
- Krabi: Minimal nightlife, mostly concentrated around Ao Nang
If nightlife is important, Phuket is the clear winner.
Which Thai island is best for a quieter, less touristy trip?
Out of these three, Krabi is generally the quietest, especially if you stay outside the main areas.
That said, if you’re specifically looking for somewhere that feels less touristy, I’d actually recommend going further and heading to Thailand's eastern islands.

What I’d actually choose (based on my experience)
This is where it becomes less about comparison and more about your trip.
It's a tough choice as I love all of Thailand, but I think my overall winner would be to base myself in Krabi and either do day trips to other islands or boat trips into Phang Nga Bay, or I would use it as a start of a wider island hopping itineary.
I love the landscapes of Krabi, it really is a once in a lifetime view (unless like me you can't help but keep coming back...), it's quieter, there isn't traffic, and it's still easy enough to get to.

If I didn't want to island hop and I wanted a laidback holiday on a Thai island, I would choose Koh Samui. There is enough on the island to keep you busy but it doesn't command the same crowds as Phuket. It's very laid back with beautiful hotels, beaches, and it's easy to get around without too much traffic.
The biggest mistake is trying to pick the “best” island. The better question is: which one fits your trip best?
Would I recommend Phuket? Yes absolutely, Phuket is great for travellers who want stuff to do all the time, like bigger hotels with more facilities, want to hang out at beach clubs, and it's also extremely family friendly.
