Sifnos Travel Guide (2026): The Perfect Quiet Island in Greece

Tucked away in the Aegean Sea, Sifnos is a gem that shimmers under the Greek sun with am understated elegance. The island offering the irresistible timelessness of how it felt travelling 20+ years ago. The Cyclades are some of the most popular islands in Europe, but Sifnos is one of the quieter islands in Greece, offering the perfect holiday to any traveller wanting an escape.

Whether you're wandering through the cobbled streets of Apollonia, savouring the slow-cooked flavours of mastelo, or basking under the golden sun on Faros Beach, Sifnos effortlessly captures the essence of Greek island beauty.

Below is my Sifnos travel guide, designed to help you navigate your own way to this beautiful Aegean island.

How to Get to Sifnos

By Air:

The island does not have its own airport, so your journey will start elsewhere.

If you are travelling long haul, your best option is to fly to Athens. From here you can take in a few days to soak in its incredible culture and history, or you can head straight to the port to catch your ferry to Sifnos.

Alternatively, if you are flying from within Europe (or Dubai), you can head to the island of Mykonos and take the ferry to Sifnos.

By Sea:

From Athens: Make your way to the port of Piraeus, a bustling port town located around 45 minutes from the airport by taxi or an hour by metro. Piraeus serves as the main departure point for ferries heading to Sifnos. Ferries are plentiful, with options ranging from high-speed catamarans to traditional, more leisurely vessels.

I recommend using Direct Ferries to book your ferries. Book as far in advance as possible to save money, prices will increase the closer you get to your departure date.

High-Speed Ferries: High-speed ferries are the best choice. Companies such as SeaJets and Golden Star Ferries offer services that can whisk you to the island in as little as 2.5 hours. These ferries are modern, comfortable, and equipped with amenities to ensure a pleasant voyage.

Alternative Routes: Island Hopping

Sifnos is well-connected to other Cycladic islands such as Mykonos and Santorini. This route allows you to explore multiple islands before arriving in Sifnos.

Final Steps: Arriving in Sifnos

You will arrive in the port of Kamares. A network of buses and taxis can take you to your accommodation, alternatively there are car hire services at the port (I advise to pre-book).

Important:

It's important to note the ferries is Greece can be cancelled at late notice due to adverse weather conditions. Whilst this is rare, I would not advise booking ferries on the same day you fly.

Secondly, if you are wanting to hire a car on Sifnos island (I recommend this!), make sure you pre-book, especially in the summer season. Whilst Sifnos is a pretty quiet island in Greece, there are a limited amount of hire cars on the island. I booked my car hire through Discover Cars.

Driving in Sifnos

Sifnos is a mountainous island, driving around offers visitors the freedom to go where they want, when they want, especially as public transport services are limited.

There are no highways on the island but the roads felt safe and easy to drive around. Remember the Greeks drive on the right! And don't forget cars are usually manual unless you specifically select an automatic.

There is so much to see and do in Sifnos, historical sites, plenty of places to eat, and a ton of natural beauty. Here’s a guide to the top experiences that will make your visit to Sifnos unforgettable.

Explore the beautiful beaches

Sifnos is home to some beautiful beaches. Vathi Beach, a stunning crescent of golden sand bordered by clear, shallow waters, is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. 

For a more secluded experience, head to Faros Beach, a picturesque bay with tranquil waters ideal for swimming; you can also hike to Chrissopigi Beach if you’re up for some adventure.

Meanwhile, Platis Gialos, one of the longest beaches on the island, is a lively stretch of golden sand that has something for all travellers. This more vibrant beach comes with a range of amenities such as sunbeds, water sports, and beachfront bars.

For the most laidback experience on the island and a taste of traditional Greek island life, spend a day at Cheronissos, a quaint fishing village with a charming beach. This is where the locals come, don't forget to try the local taverna whilst you're here!

Kastro was one of my favourite villages in Sifnos, a fortified settlement that stands as the island's ancient capital.

Perched on a cliff, Kastro is filled with cobbled streets, boutique shops, ancient ruins, and traditional houses.

As you wander through its narrow streets, you'll find Venetian loggias, ancient churches, and charming houses adorned with bougainvillea.

Explore the Archaeological Museum of Sifnos, and make your way to the Church of the Seven Martyrs, perched on a rocky outcrop, for amazing views of the Aegean Sea.

For the best experience, head back at sunset and watch the town come alive with quaint rooftop bars and tavernas that spill out onto the streets. You will find locals and travellers enjoying drinks with strangers and appreciating the beautiful views!

Sifnos is a great choice for lovers of the outdoors, the island offers an extensive network of hiking trails that criss cross the most stunning landscapes.

One of the most popular routes is the trail from Artemonas to Kastro, which takes you through olive groves, terraced fields, and picturesque villages.

Another must-do hike is the path from Vathi to Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point, offering panoramic views that stretch across the Cyclades.
