Top Picks for Winter Sun Destinations
I can’t believe we have made it to winter already, but it's not all bad; winter sun season is one of my favourites. What better excuse do we need than the cold winter days to escape to far-flung places around the world? Instead of moaning about the weather, I thought I would compile a list of my top winter sun destinations instead.
Thailand
Thailand has a bit of everything: mountains, tropical beaches, world-class cities, and some of the friendliest people you will ever encounter.
The best time to visit Thailand is from December to March when the weather is dry and sunny. Islands like Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Phuket will transport you into a tropical paradise. More off the beaten track, you will find smaller islands such as Koh Lipe, Koh Kood and Koh Chang.
Bangkok, offers an entirely different experience with the hustle and bustle of tuk tuks, taxis, huge shopping malls and busy night markets.
Head to the mountains of Chiang Rai for an authentic countryside experience. I highly recommend an ethical elephant experience where the animals are treated with respect and free to roam around vast expanses of countryside.
Hotels such as the Four Seasons Tented Camp and Anantara Golden Triangle offer magical elephant experiences without compromising the elephant’s freedoms or rights
Maldives
A magical destination for so many, the best time to travel to the Maldives is from late November to early April.
A nation made up of hundreds of coral islands, many people assume it is just a romantic destination, but it's there for all to enjoy.
Family friendly islands such as Niyama, Dhigu, and Soneva Fushi will ensure you and your children experience a holiday of a lifetime. Whereas smaller, more intimate islands such as Kandolhu and Constance Moofushi are beautiful for a couple's escape.
For those wondering, it is certainly possible to visit the Maldives on a budget. I recommend visiting local islands such as Fulidhoo Island for an authentic (and much cheaper) experience. Not only will you save money, but you can mingle with locals and experience more of the Maldivian culture.
A true ‘fly and flop’ destination, visiting the Maldives is a slow-paced experience in which you don’t even need to bring your shoes. That being said, plenty of activities are available depending on which island you choose, such as watersports, boat trips, cooking classes, local island excursions, snorkelling, diving, and so much more.
